How to Merge Duplicate Contacts on Android
By CleanX TeamPublished
Quick answer
- In Google’s Contacts app, pick the Google Account at the top right, then tap Fix & manage › Merge & fix › Merge duplicates.
- Tap Merge on a suggestion, or Merge all at the bottom.
- Google says you can’t merge contacts saved in different Google Accounts.
Google’s Contacts app suggests duplicate listings for the same person and merges them for you. The steps below are for Google’s Contacts app; phones that use the phone maker’s own Contacts app may name things differently.
Merge duplicates in the Contacts app
Step 1: Pick the account
Open the Contacts app and, at the top right, select the Google Account that has the duplicates.
Step 2: Open Merge & fix
At the bottom, tap Fix & manage, then Merge & fix.
Step 3: Merge
Tap Merge duplicates. Tap Merge on one suggestion, or Merge all for every suggestion.
Merge on a computer
In Google Contacts on a computer, click Menu › Merge & fix, then Merge on a suggestion or Merge all. Contacts saved to your Google Account sync with your Android devices.
If you merge the wrong contacts
Google says you can separate a contact you merged by undoing changes to your contacts. In Google Contacts on a computer, click Settings › Undo changes, choose a time up to 30 days back, then Confirm. This undoes every change made since then, and contacts added after that time won’t appear.

Find duplicates by name or number with CleanX
On Android, CleanX finds contacts that share a name or a phone number, shows a preview of the merged card, then updates one contact with the name you choose and the combined phone numbers and email addresses, and deletes the others. It also lists contacts with no name or no phone number so you can fix or delete them.

- Preview before you merge

- Check people who share a name: two different people can have the same name.
